The best restaurants in Palamós
From fish landed in the afternoon to the red prawn: where and what to eat in Palamós, by hosts who dine there.
In Palamós, the sea goes straight onto your plate. Every afternoon the fishing port lands the fish and seafood that, a few hours later, appear on the tables along the seafront. Here is how to eat well around here, without going wrong.
What you have to try
The local star is the red prawn of Palamós, simply grilled and barely seasoned with salt: suck the head, that’s where all the flavour is. For slow-cooked dishes, look out for suquet de peix (the fishermen’s fish stew), the arrossos (lobster rice, black rice with cuttlefish ink) and fideuà, paella’s cousin made with little noodles.
- The catch of the day: ask for the chalkboard rather than the set menu.
- The tapas of the old town for a laid-back dinner.
- A crema catalana or a coca to finish.
Where to go for what you fancy
The seafront lines up its terraces facing the harbour: perfect for fish and seafood platters. The old town hides more intimate tapas spots in its narrow streets. And in La Fosca, a few tables with your feet in the sand let you walk home after dinner.
Our host tips
- The weekday lunch menu is often an excellent deal.
- In July and August, book the good tables, especially for the prawn.
- Trust the places that follow the fish auction: a sign of a kitchen that changes with the catch.
From our apartments in La Fosca, all of this is just minutes away. And to understand where this fish comes from, read our guide on the prawn and the fish auction of Palamós.
