Palamós: fishing port, old town and market

Beyond the beaches, Palamós is above all a working fishing port, one of the most important on the Costa Brava. That’s what gives it its soul — and its cuisine. Here’s plenty to fill a fine half-day in town.

The port and the culture of the sea

In late afternoon you can watch the boats come in and the bustle of the fish auction. The Museu de la Pesca, set on the quay, tells this story of fishermen better than any brochure; there you’ll understand where the famous Palamós prawn comes from.

The old town

The nucli antic lines up its narrow streets and façades around the church of Santa Maria. You stroll, you stop for a drink on a terrace, you push on to the seafront and its passeig lined with plane trees.

Market and atmosphere

• The market is the chance to stock up on local produce for a cove picnic.
• In summer, the port and the centre come alive with festivals and concerts.
• Sunset from the jetty or the beach: free and unbeatable.
