Castell beach, the most beautiful wild beach on the Costa Brava
A great sandy beach untouched by concrete, saved by its people — with an Iberian settlement perched above.
A few minutes from La Fosca, Castell beach (Platja de Castell) is one of the last great beaches on the Costa Brava to have stayed completely wild: no buildings, no concrete promenade, just sand, pines and sea.
A beach saved by its people
If Castell still looks like the Costa Brava of fifty years ago, it is no accident: in the 1990s, a grassroots campaign in Palamós blocked a development project. The beach and its pine wood are now protected — a small miracle on this coastline.
The Iberian settlement above
On the headland that closes the bay stand the remains of the poblat ibèric de Castell, a fortified settlement more than two thousand years old, looking straight down over the coast. A short climb rewarded with a superb panorama.
Our host tips
- You reach the beach via a dirt track and a few minutes’ walk: that’s exactly what preserves it.
- Arrive early in high season, parking is limited.
- Few services on site: bring water, shade and a picnic.
- You can also walk in via the Camí de Ronda.
It’s our favourite spot for a day in nature with the family, a stone’s throw from the apartment.
