In the footsteps of Dalí: Figueres, Portlligat and Púbol

Salvador Dalí was born and died in Figueres, a little over an hour’s drive from La Fosca. All his life he gravitated around the Empordà and the Costa Brava, which fed his imagination. Three places make up the “Dalí triangle” — you can visit one a day, or do them all in a single stay.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum (Figueres)

This is the museum to see: Dalí designed it himself as a total work of art, on the ruins of the old theatre of his home town. A glass dome, giant eggs on the roofs, surprise rooms… and his tomb, inside. Allow a good half-day.

The Portlligat house (Cadaqués)

In Portlligat, near Cadaqués, Dalí turned former fishermen’s huts into a labyrinthine house where he lived and painted for decades, facing a tiny bay. The visit is in small groups, by reservation: be sure to book well in advance.

Gala’s castle in Púbol

In Púbol, about half an hour from Palamós, Dalí gave his muse Gala a medieval castle that he redecorated for her. Garden, painted ceilings, cars and dresses: the most intimate and least crowded of the three.
